Description:

The Washington Shoe Building is located in Pioneer Square across from Occidental Mall, a unique public space featuring outdoor cafes, art galleries and shops on a tree lined plaza.

The building's brick masonry exterior features an Art Deco sandstone retail façade. Interior features include five floors of office space, with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, two passenger elevators, operable windows, an HVAC system, and fiber optics. The ground floor includes five street-level retail spaces and the basement parking garage offers valet parking and bike storage.

Built in 1892, the Washington Shoe Building was originally a manufacturing location and retail store for the Washington Shoe Company. During the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush, the company supplied boots to incoming stampeders in Seattle who were on their way to Alaska to seek their fortunes. (Although the Washington Shoe Co. is still in business today, it no longer occupies the Pioneer Square location, though their name remains painted in bold letters on the side of the building.)

In 2001, the Washington Shoe Building underwent a complete renovation which included a seismic retrofit, incorporating modern-day life-safety features and new mechanical, electrical and communications systems. Major building tenant and renowned design practice, Olson Kundig, designed significant features of the building, including the lobby and a hydro-powered skylight that caps the central atrium stair connecting three floors of the building.

The building is located next to the Jackson Street terminus of the Seattle Streetcar to First Hill. It is within easy walking distance of the Pioneer Square Link light rail station, Sounder commuter trains, King County Metro and Sound Transit bus stops, the Washington State Ferry Terminal, and the King County Water Taxi.
